Write4Good Research & Communications™
It turns out, to my amazement, that "Toolie® the Travel Guide" is an expert in Technology
and Travel. So much so, that she can tell you which hotels in various parts of the world
offer the best connections for your laptop, transportation, etc.
Toolie is the best resource I've found for Time-Efficient Business Travel. She even
writes travel guides! Toolie offers free weekly 30-minute laptop skills webinars.
She teaches one or two computer skills per session from her in-depth knowledge
of Windows, office technologies, and technology for travel. She also researches
and demonstrates products and services that are useful for small businesses.
Q & A Interview
1. If you could TITLE your personal story, what would that title be? The title would
be “I Am Willing To Learn.” I started out as a musician, so being willing to do whatever it
took to get through undergrad and graduate school was essential. I got hooked up with
computers during the summer between my sophomore and junior years of college, and my
willingness to learn the computer business and be persistent has paid me well for more than
25 years.
2. Does your personal and business life feel well balanced or like a juggling act
– and how so? Well, I’m a non-parent with a loving and supportive spouse, so I tend to
work more than play, but we do make time to get out of our home-based offices and relax.
We are both “artists” with a passion for technology, so our “work” feels more like play
than work! Because I love what I do, because I can be creative while doing it, I’m content with
my work-life balance even if others would consider it mostly work.
3. What inspires you to do what you do and to inspire others? On more than one
occasion I’ve been stuck in a job with no future, and a friend gave me a break when I needed
it. The key was being willing to learn what I needed to learn to succeed. I deal with
adults all the time who give up too easily instead of staying open and being persistent. My
job is to explain technology so they have a chance to grow and benefit from improved skills
and greater understanding. I like giving them “a break” by teaching what I know in a friendly
and accessible way.
4. How do you describe what you do?
I’m a teacher, plain and simple. Whether I’m writing my business travel newsletter and
sharing my logistical shortcuts, or conducting a webinar on how to manage email, I am a
researcher, teacher, and writer. I know how to look at a problem, break it down into
manageable steps, and explain a solution.
5. Who are your ideal clients to work with? My business travel knowledge is beneficial to
both corporate and entrepreneurial business travelers. My technical training and
consulting appeals to intermediate users in small and medium-sized businesses that are
ready to grow. I’ve spent many years in the corporate world and would gladly work with big
business, but I really enjoy working with and supporting the entrepreneurial spirit.
6. How does your business benefit your clientele?
I teach hard-core computer skills to people who have a job to do. Business travelers are just
businesspeople in motion; they’re still expected to get the same amount of work done
while traveling. The key to success is to have strong computer skills so that you can
leverage technology to stay ahead. You need those skills whether you sit in an office all day
or are a true road warrior. That’s why my technology work overlaps my business travel
interests. My subscribers agree.
7. What key factors make you a success in your work?
Because I grew up with a father who was a teacher, I absorbed that outlook and approach to
life. I went on to earn an undergraduate degree in education, and I have taught in both
academic and business situations. I am also a professional speaker and writer, so I can
communicate in multiple media. I have an absolute commitment to ensuring that people who
come to learn from me really understand the subject matter. I think they catch onto my
commitment to them pretty quickly, so time and time again they come back for more.
8. What “behind the scenes ‘success’ strategies” can you share? Being “Willing to
Learn” is important, but even more than that, Persistence. I have a plaque up on the wall in
my bedroom so that I see it every morning. It’s a quote about persistence by Calvin Coolidge
the 30th President of the United States (1872-1933):
“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more
common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is
almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence
and determination alone are omnipotent.”
Having worked in several fields dominated by men (like computing) without the benefit of
the education specific to those fields, the above quote kept me going when I thought I didn’t
stand a chance of succeeding. Many highly successful people have become so simply because
they kept going. It’s not easy, but it’s worth the effort.
9. Is there anything you have done in your life or business that has catapulted you
to a new level of success? In general, I would have to say “doing the right thing and
doing it well” even when I didn’t think anyone else noticed. I think I was most proud of my
work when a colleague (who was really an acquaintance at the time) referred me for a high-
profile national opportunity based on what he had seen me accomplish locally. Needless to
say he is a dear friend now, but he decided to refer me then based on the quality of my work
alone, not because we were friends. I worked even harder to bolster his reputation as well as
mine!
A Bit "Mo": "Toolie has a passion for technology, yet her clients and colleagues love her
because she also knows how to explain technology in plain language. Most of what she's
done with computing was learned on the job. She is very sympathetic to the pressures that
both employees and entrepreneurs face in keeping up with technology."
FYI: Due to her area of expertise, as well as the benefits I believe she can add to my
clients and subscribers knowledge-base, I have invited and Jocelyn "Toolie" Garner
has graciously accepted a role on our Advisory Board.

Mo' To the Point! I met 'Toolie' in October of 2007 when I caught my favorite
*copywriting business educator "LIVE in the Act of Excellence" at her workshop. Toolie
was my partner-in-crime in planning the logistics of my appearance, timing and an added
surprise. She handled the travel end of the event as well as many of the business
logistics for the workshop given. Until then, I had never heard of such a position.
