This is what Mo once did in a similar quandary.
(At the time, I had a personalized gift shop that specialized in Invitations and my draw beyond other local
stores is that I am also a Calligrapher).  For those who do not know, Calligraphy (the art of beautiful writing)
is becoming a lost art. It takes time and offers high value as most people do not have this skill and it
typically must be hired when desired!

Posted in my Studio Showroom and placed inside Agreement Packets:

    Dear Friends,

There is no greater compliment to me, than someone I respect to request my work.
    So, THANK YOU!!!

As you know, Calligraphy is now a source of my livelihood. Because of this, I must ask for a fee.
I appreciate your understanding and support so I may give you the devotion and substance you
deserve. This will allow me to dedicate the time on your job that it should have without other work
taking away from it. I am honored by your request!

    Most Sincerely,
    Mo

Productive Strategy Footnote: As an unexpected bonus, I encourage you to “over deliver” in a way that
will show them that you appreciate their purchase after being a “freebie” client in the past.
Do this in
action,
not in words.

This is what I did. I mass produced a design in a bookmark. I then added my family or friends name
on it (in my case in Calligraphy – one word or name did not take long). On a psychological level, you
can do the same in a way that works for you. You still give them a piece of your art “from your
heart” and they continue to feel special. You still are giving them something!

Perhaps, you could take your art and turn it into an added, unexpected gift that they will value. You
can even put your biz name and contact information on the back for their future reference.
Consider openly showing this as an item that you sell in your gallery. However, for these “special
people” it is a gift that you can GIVE to them as a thank you (for and) with  their purchase.

Question from Felicia in Philly:

Dear Mo,
I am an artist and just opened a small gallery. This is a big step for me. I used to
love painting and giving away my work to family and friends, yet now my time is
limited and I intend to sell my work. I’m afraid I set myself up for disaster as people
assume I will still give it to them. I would, yet now have overhead and can’t afford to
spend my time and hours for nothing.  I really want to build my business and make
a go at this. Any ideas on dealing with my people?
