| JCF Pioneered Philanthropy Camp This Summer Tikkun Olam Camp is a program of CYF. The Community Youth Foundation (CYF) was launched ten years ago from the Jewish Community Foundation. This summer was one of the first philanthropy camps in the nation -- a one-week day camp for high school students. Tikkun Olam Camp (justice): ethical responsibilities, sacred word was established to encourage students ages 14-18 to become philanthropists by empowering them with skills to donate effectively. More than 223 students from various denominations and affiliations in San Diego have gained firsthand experience in community service since the inception of (CYF). The camps’ vision came to light as the students were provided with opportunities to learn about giving. This was done by visits to local non-profits and organized planning of allocation of funds to community programs and organizations. Out of 10 organizations, 8 were granted funds that totaled $3,000. The goals were to educate students about community needs and organizations and engage students in philanthropic giving and community service. The Students: • Diverse geographic regions • Varying degrees of Affiliation • Attend Public and Private high schools • Wide age range • Children of JCF donors and children from families not affiliated with JCF The Model: • 6 day, intense experience • 10 site visits • 5 Volunteer Projects • Conversation with Philanthropists • $3,000. Awarded Results: • 100% know more about needs in community • 100% know more about non-profit • 100% more interested in philanthropy and volunteering • 100% have better understanding ofhow to evaluate non-profits • 100% would recommend the program to a friend. The organizations were all nonprofits in the following genres: • Education - College campus group • Arts/Culture - Museum • Health and Human Services- child development • Environmental • Human Relations Over its four decades, the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation has grown its assets to almost $225 million.
