2007 September - Premier Award
Orrin Hudson, Founder of Be Someone, Inc. is an Achievement Strategy Expert, Author, & Speaker and the inspiration of this month's topic MAKE EVERY MOVE COUNT!
|
"The greatest crime in the world is not
developing your potential. When you do what
you do best, you are helping not only yourself,
but the world." -Orrin Hudson, Be Someone
After receiving a beautiful correspondence nominating Orrin Hudson
for this award, we have come to know a man that exposes a new
layer of substance with every conversation we have.
Who is Orrin Hudson anyhow?
He is a man who believes the greatest gift you can give a child is the
ability to make a good decision. He teaches kids to look 2 or 3 moves
down the road and see which is the best move to make, not just in chess,
yet also in life. Be sure to read the bio interspersed in Orrin's interview to see the
catastrophic event that propelled him to risk everything and Be Someone who is
following through with his life mission.
Hudson, founded Be Someone, Inc. with the passion to reach the sensibilities of
children at a time when they are open to learn and incorporate strategies in their
lives to MAKE EVERY MOVE COUNT.
It is difficult to put everything about Orrin in one spot. Be sure to continue to the
page-end to see the political and celebrity attention Orrin has captured.
Meanwhile, take note on just a few:
...CNN called Orrin Hudson the "Pied Piper of Positivity."
...Donald Trump called him up to share his stage.
...Jack Canfield wrote the forward for Hudson's book,
ONE MOVE AT A TIME.
This picture collage shows "just a few" of the hands Hudson has shaken!
- Monica Pearson with ABC News in Atlanta,
- Jimmy Carter, previous US President
- Colin Powell, Secretary of State
- Dexter King, son of Coretta Scott & Martin Luther King
- Jane Fonda, Actress
- Larry King, Live with Orrin!
- Ted Turner, founder of Turner Broadcasting
After reading the Q & A Interview below, remember
to to check out who Orrin is recognized by in the
speaker, author, coaching world...
Every time we speak to Orrin, he is about to be
interviewed on the News, presenting at a seminar,
dining with dignitaries or working with kids...
...Mo Bailey says:
"Hudson is The Man of Presidents and Pawns!"
AND
"Gandhi's words, 'Be the change you want to see in the world' is a
concept many of us consider, yet Hudson has put in action!"
As an Achievement Strategy Expert, Hudson is all about helping others
win in the game of life through chess. When asked what we could say
that would be most beneficial to his mission, Orrin said he most wants to
develop a nationwide (eventually worldwide) team who will train in his
presentations (do you know how to play chess and talk?) and take his
program to every child-centered organization, association and school
district who will support his message and the future of our kids.
Bottom Line - Be Someone, Inc. generates the following and is always
open to others for:
- VOLUNTEERS,
- $$$, Sponsorship and Partners
- Kids with desire to succeed in life
Below the Q & A, don't forget to see Hudson's collage of
celebrity and political hobnobbing!
(9) interview Questions by Mo Bailey
(9) short Answers by Orrin Hudson
#1: If you could title your personal story, what would that title be?
I have been blessed to actually have a title for my personal story. That title and
the name of my organization is “Be Someone.” I like this title because everyone
wants a child to be someone, and if everyone can be someone, everyone wins. I
picked the title because I remembered how Abraham Lincoln’s mother’s advice, "be
someone," had helped Lincoln aspire to the White House. I believe that each one
of us should be all that God created us to be. Orrin's Example: James Edge, a white
teacher in an all black high school, saw the potential in Orrin Hudson. The seventh of thirteen
children, Orrin knew trouble in his early life. He was in and out of foster homes and involved in
petty crime, but James Edge sat him down and showed him his actions had consequences. Mr.
Edge taught Orrin how to play chess and win in life. Voted "Most Likely to Succeed" and
"Outstanding Student" in his senior year, Orrin stepped into the world and began to exceed
those predictions.
#2: Does your personal and business life feel well-balanced or like a
juggling act? It’s been a juggling act. It’s getting a lot better. For six years not
much happened, and now the floodgates are opening, with everyone calling at
once. It’s like the bank won’t loan you any money until you prove that you don’t
need it. Orrin's Example: As an adult, Orrin served as an Alabama State Trooper for six years,
developing the discipline needed to be a winner. He later owned and operated a car
dealership, succeeding once again as a business and community leader. Being the best
continued to be a large part of Orrin’s personal strategy. He gleaned back to back victories when
he defeated the Alabama State Chess Champion two years in a row. Orrin then beat one of the
top Russian Grandmasters, who had won more tournaments in the U.S. than anyone at the
time.
#3: What inspires you to do what you do to inspire others?
The life I save may be my own. If we educate others, everyone wins. It bothers me
to see our young children robbing and killing people for money. They don’t realize
their own unique combinations of power. In chess, for example, the bishop, the
knight and the queen have their own unique combinations of power, each different,
each important. So kids have to find that for themselves. I tell them, “Don’t worry
about Tiger Woods and Oprah Winfrey, they found their talent. But you have a
talent of your own, and when you find it, you can build it just as high.” But I also
tell them, and they learn it through playing chess, “If you’re not willing to pay the
price of success, you’ll never succeed.” Orrin's Example: On May 24, 2000, Orrin’s life
changed when he saw a newscast about two men who went into a Wendy’s, rounded up seven
employees, duct-taped plastic bags over their heads, and shot them in the head at point blank
range. The killers’ left with $2400. Believing that evil prevails when good people do nothing,
Orrin knew he had to do something but wasn’t sure what. Then someone asked him what he
would do if he only had six months to live, and with that, Orrin had his answer. In 2001, he took
his life’s savings and started Be Someone, Inc. to teach kids, through chess, that every move
counts.
#4: How do you describe what you do?
Two hundred years ago Benjamin Franklin said that chess was an excellent tool to
teach decision-making skills, and if he’s on the hundred dollar bill, we need to
listen to him. The greatest gift you can give a child is the ability to make a good
decision. So I use the ancient game of chess to teach that skill: “Is this true, is this
honest, is this the best move I can make?” Chess also teaches concentration,
patience, personal responsibility, sportsmanship, and teamwork. I tell the kids that
chess is like an open book test—all the answers are on the board. Don’t move
until you see it—think about it. If you lose, you have only yourself to blame, no
one else, but make losing your vitamin. I tell them that together everyone achieves
miracles. In chess the king is the weakest piece, but the king surrounds himself
with other pieces that make moves he cannot. So if you’re the smartest person on
your team, you need a new team. Orrin's Example: Orrin makes up what he says he
lacks in experience with preparation. I'm not sure I buy into this, yet Orrin says he is really not
that good, but he's looked at other people who are and modeled what they've done. "If you do
what successful people do, then you will succeed."
- Orrin Hudson
#5: Who are your ideal clients to work with?
My preferred clients are nine to eighteen. And in this group I prefer the least, the
last, and the lost. I teach them success strategies, “to think it out, not shoot it out,
“to push pawns, not drugs.” I teach them that “KASH is king,” and that KASH
stands for knowledge, attitude, skills, and habits. I want to show these kids that
they can do whatever they want to in life as long as they believe in themselves and
apply themselves. I use chess as a metaphor for life—the pieces become our
resources, and the moves become our skills. All the answers are on the board.
Just like in life, whatever you give out in this game is what you get back. Orrin's
Example: Orrin told us he believes the greatest gift you can give a child is the ability to make a
good decision. He teaches kids to look 2 or 3 moves down the road and see which is the best
move to make, not just in chess, yet also in life.
Orrin Hudson is a poetic philosopher: See his viewpoints in red.
#6: How does your business benefit your client?
We benefit kids by teaching them that every move they make has consequences.
It takes years off their learning curves. (Even non-moves have consequences. My
mom whooped me many a time for something I didn’t do.) I believe in prevention,
not detention. Everyone can be someone, if they simply make the right moves.
"The board and pieces become a metaphor for life, where the pieces become our
resources and the moves become our skills."
- Orrin Hudson
#7: What has catapulted you to success?
What has catapulted me to success is realizing that excellence is not enough, you’
ve got to be amazing. Satisfying the customer is not enough, you have to delight
the customer. And when you go the extra mile, there are never any traffic jams.
"It's called making the correct move. Every move you make has a purpose. Every
time you make a move, think about the purpose or reason. Does it make
sense?" - Orrin Hudson
#8: What was the most gratifying day of your professional life?
It was in Spring of 2007. I was sharing the stage with Dr.Ellie Drake, Founder of
BraveHeart Women- at her two-day extravaganza. Completely to my surprise, she
presented my program, Be Someone, Inc. with a 20K donation. "You have a blank
check for the future. You cannot fly with the eagles if you're scratching with the
turkeys." - Orrin Hudson
#9: If this interview could help you obtain anything you want, what would
that be? I'm looking to create a dream team. I want to start in North America and
train adult chess players in every state to spread my message and duplicate what I
do with the kids. I'm looking for volunteers to train and take my program to the kids.
I want to find other people who want to Be Someone! "I'm doing this out of my own
pocket because I believe in what I'm doing. Because I have a passion to do this.
This is my life. If I can keep one person from killing another person, then my life
was not in vain." - Orrin Hudson
