Q & A with Carolyn:
If you could TITLE your personal story, what would that title be?
"Turning Divorce into a Gift - How to take a devastating personal experience
and turn it into an opportunity to support thousands of divorced families."

What was it like for you before this situation occurred?
"About 8 years ago, I appeared to 'have it all.' A twenty year relationship
and marriage to my high school sweetheart, an Ivy-league education, successful
career in fundraising and three healthy and happy young children. But then the
marriage hit the rocks and my life turned upside down as I faced the prospect of
divorce. I made a choice that just settling for “getting through” and “surviving”
my divorce was not good enough for me or my children. Even though I didn’t
know how to do it, I decided to use this life-altering experience to make me a
better mom and create a life I love.  I wanted to thrive and flourish. I knew my
children deserved that. I felt I deserved that too."

I’ve had an interesting career with very different kinds of jobs, but looking
back I see there is a connective thread. I’ve always been inspired to make a
difference in people’s lives in some way. Whether I was working on Wall Street,
as a policy advisor to government or training volunteers to raise money for
education, I’ve always wanted to have some kind of “value added” that I could
leave with people. My divorce has opened up the creation of a business, Thrive
After Divorce,  that I’m absolutely passionate about. My mission is to help
separated and divorced individuals regain their self-esteem and confidence so
they can enjoy loving relationships and create a life they love.

How did this INSPIRATION change things in your life/biz?
My inspiration to use my divorce experience in a positive way has led me to so
many
wonderful new adventures that I never could have imagined having!
In my journey to heal my own heart, I retrained myself and became the first
Canadian to be certified as a Spiritual Divorce Coach.  My first book, “The 7
Pitfalls of Single Parenting: What to Avoid so Your Children Thrive after
Divorce”, will be published in June! The word “thrive” resonated so strongly for
me I’ve just launched my company, Thrive After Divorce, which is dedicated to
providing success strategies and resources for separated and divorced
individuals. I currently do this through bi-weekly e-zines, teleclasses and
coaching. This year I’m going to be launching a number of products, in addition
to my book, that will help people through the maze of divorce, as well as
workshops and seminars.  In addition, I am a part-time staff coach with the Ford
Institute of Integrative Coaching at John F. Kennedy University at San
Francisco, helping to train hundreds of coaches worldwide.

What are things like for you and your biz NOW?
If you’d told me five years ago that I’d be doing half the things I’m doing
now,
I would have thought you were nuts. I wake up each day filled with a huge
sense of gratitude for finding a way to express what I feel is my purpose on the
planet. My relationship with my children has never been stronger. I am fuelled
by an inner sense of peace and vitality that I can use my mistakes and
experiences to serve others in a very positive way. I am guided daily by my
personal mission, which is to empower parents to raise children who can
fearlessly create and express their highest potential.  It’s ironic that what felt like
the most devastating failure of my life has opened up the doors to a completely
new understanding of who I am and what I can do to make a difference to others.

What inspires you now to do what you do?
What inspires me most is to see the light in my children’s eyes. I thought my
relationship with my children was pretty good when I was married. But our
relationship and love for each other has become much stronger, more honest
and more connected than I ever thought possible.  My
children are my
greatest teachers
and I feel grateful every single day for the blessings they
bring to me.

What inspires you to inspire others?
I’m inspired to empower others to make the choice to thrive as well. When I
hear a client have their “aha” moment and realize that they can make a
different choice, that’s when I know they have just altered the trajectory of their
life. To work with someone and offer them practical and powerful tools that can
help them create a life they love fills me with joy. I feel very privileged to work
with people this way. I’ve seen people wake up and realize they can be the
architect of their own life and transform relationships and issues in ways that are
nothing short of miraculous.
