Every Moment Counts toward Your Life Purpose
by Marlene Chism
Right before midlife something happens. The search begins. You wonder
about your career choices or lack thereof. You worry that it may be too late to
have a family, build a career, get an advanced degree, or (fill in the blank). You
question your relationships, your past decisions and you wonder if you are
making the most of your time on this earth.
You want your life to matter and you aspire to live on purpose to such a
degree that you know with out a doubt each moment counts. You ask yourself the
question “Is this all there is?”
The first tragedy is when you know you want something more but don’t know
what it is. I was in the first tragedy for over ten years as I struggled to figure out
how to be something more than a factory worker doing blue collar work every
day. I had tried everything from competitive bodybuilding to getting my license as
a cosmetologist in the search for that “something more,” but nothing satisfied the
desire for finding a fulfilling career and life purpose. The lesson of the first
tragedy is discovery.
It was my friend and fellow bodybuilder, Marsha who helped me out of the first life
tragedy by asking a question: “What would you do if there were no limits?”
After some hesitation I said, “I would be a dancer or a choreographer.”
She said, “That’s not going to happen, what’s your second choice?”
“To be a professional speaker,” I said.
Once you discover and verbalize what you want, you advance into the
second tragedy: You know what you want but don’t believe it’s possible. I stayed
in the second tragedy for over two years as I pondered the probability of a factory
worker becoming a professional speaker. During this “second tragedy” I learned
some things essential to my work in helping others reach their potential: In order
to get past the second tragedy, each choice you make must move you forward to
increasing your belief in what is possible for you. The lesson of the second
tragedy is about faith.
You must take full responsibility for every aspect of your life. Every choice and
every moment is an act of faith or an act of self betrayal.
Many people view faith as sitting in a dark room saying a prayer and waiting for a
miracle, when in reality faith is the law of action. Faith is taking action toward a
goal without getting a guarantee.
For example when I was competing in bodybuilding, I was “faithful” in working out
consistently and I rarely cheated on my diet. As I took action, I noticed more
muscle and less fat. With this observation, my belief increased and I continued
taking action working until the day of the contest. I learned to trust that I would do
what it takes to be satisfied the day of competition. Although I won several state
titles, it was the little moments that taught me about materializing or manifesting a
dream. The same principles work in life for accomplishing any dream or goal.
With my new goal in mind, I took action by getting a college education, joining
Toastmasters to hone my speaking skills, and learning as much as possible
about the business world. Eventually opportunities started to materialize.
Right before the accomplishment of any goal, you pass through the third
tragedy. Your faith is tested in the third tragedy as you have to prove your
willingness to do what it takes. In every moment you answer the question, “What
are you willing to do to make the dream a reality?” For me the test of my
commitment meant quitting my full time job.
The lesson of the third tragedy is choice. Sometimes you have to give up one
thing to get another. For some people that means leaving a relationship, getting
new friends, giving up old habits that no longer help you realize your purpose.
I had to give up a steady paycheck, a 401K and a sense of security. I changed
my resignation date three times. Instead of settling for many meaningless
moments, you make every single moment count and that often means stepping
out of your comfort zone.
If you are on that journey and feel fragmented, take heart: Eventually the puzzle
pieces will fit together. All of your life experiences add up to define the person
you are, yet you hold the power to create a new moment right from where you
stand.
Count yourself lucky if you have escaped the first tragedy. I can help you believe
and encourage you to take action, but it is still up to you to answer the first
question, ‘What do you want?’
